Opened as a satellite station for RAF Swinderby in September 1940, RAF Winthorpe, was initially used by the 300 and 301 Polish squadrons equipped with Fairey Battles. Eventually the base became home to No. 1661 Heavy Conversion Unit, training Lancaster crews. In 1944 it joined No.7 Group and in 1945 it transferred to Transport Command.
